Moberly Area tops Lady Raiders with 54 free throws

MOBERLY, Mo. — "I am glad I will never come back to Moberly again because you've got to beat eight people," said Three Rivers coach Jeff Walk, who is retiring at the end of the season. Moberly Area attempted 54 free throws Friday as Three Rivers was called for 32 fouls. The Raiders, meanwhile, earned 15 free throws as the Greyhounds won 90- 74. "It was in the third quarter where it was no touch on one end and get all you can on the other and it was never in our favor," Walk said. "Hopefully we will grow from it and get mentally stronger. We are just going to have to overcome things when we go on the road."

The Greyhounds had 24 free throws in the third quarter, which is also when they retook the lead for good. Three Rivers took its first lead at the tail end of the first quarter and held it until the final shot of the third, but never by double digits. Moberly's Bi'Anna Pettis scored just before the end of the third quarter. DeAnna Wilson, who led all scorers with 20 points, drove and scored midway (15-3, 1-0 Region XVI) through the fourth quarter to put the Greyhounds ahead by eight, the largest lead in the game up to that point. Soon after, Jamila Nansikombi, who finished with 17 points, caught a pass in the high post, dribbled and scored to put Moberly Area up by 11, the first doubledigit lead for either team. The Raiders (13-5, 1-1), fouling to the very end, were outscored in the fourth quarter 32-17. It is Three Rivers' first regular season Region XVI loss since losing at home against Moberly Area on Jan. 27, 2018. Three Rivers did not lose a region game last season to go to the national tournament. The loss is also the Raiders' first true road loss of the season. Three Rivers was 4-0 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites heading into Friday's game. Deanay Watson and Chaylea Mosby led the Raiders with 15 points and Katelyn South had 13.
